5 Signs of a Great Support Worker

Updated: Sep 17

A great support worker plays a key role in helping people live fulfilling lives. At Accessway, we look for caring support workers who share our values of respect, independence and safety. Support workers become trusted partners in your journey, assisting you at home and in the community.

What Makes a Great Support Worker

Here are five qualities that make a support worker exceptional:

  • Empathy and Respect: They listen carefully and treat every person with kindness, dignity and patience. This helps each participant feel heard, valued and safe.

  • Reliability: You can count on them to show up on time and follow through on their commitments. Truly reliable workers help participants and families feel secure and confident in their day.

  • Communication Skills: Clear, friendly communication (both listening and speaking) is essential. A good support worker explains things simply, asks questions to understand needs, and updates everyone about progress.

  • Flexibility: No two days are the same, so great support workers adapt to changes and solve problems calmly. They embrace new challenges with a creative and positive attitude.

  • Professionalism: This includes having the right training, teamwork skills and respect for privacy. A professional support worker understands boundaries, follows procedures, and always keeps safety in mind.

Support Worker Spotlight

A young boy who is just trying to fit in, thought to act cool when he met his support workers by swearing and saying unkind things to his family members. As the support worker continued to support the boy, the good nature and values show by the support worker's actions and presence had a positive on the young man. A support Coordinator wrote an email to us saying this:

“[Support worker] was incredible with “Jake” yesterday at the dentist. Offered to take him, and sat with “Jake” while getting his fillings - held “Jake's” hand when he needed extra comfort and was such a calming influence for “Jake” in such a tricky time - “Jake” has never had fillings done before. Mum felt so at ease and could stand at the door just observing knowing “Jake” was well supported.“

We are proud to have support workers who truly make a difference. Whether you need quality support for yourself or a loved one, or you’re interested in joining our caring team, we’d love to hear from you.
