What is Supported Independent Living (SIL)? A Plain-English Guide for South-East Queensland
You’ve heard the term “Supported Independent Living”. Maybe your Support Coordinator mentioned it. Maybe it’s in your NDIS plan. But what does it actually mean — and is it right for you?
You’ve heard the term “Supported Independent Living”. Maybe your Support Coordinator mentioned it. Maybe it’s in your NDIS plan. But what does it actually mean — and is it right for you?
Here’s what you need to know, in plain English.
What SIL actually is
Supported Independent Living — or SIL — is NDIS funding that pays for a support worker to help you at home, around the clock. Not just for a few hours a week. SIL is for people who need some level of support 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
That support can look like lots of different things:
- Help getting up, showering, and getting dressed in the morning
- Cooking meals and managing medication
- Getting out into the community — shops, appointments, social activities
- Building skills so you can do more on your own over time
- Knowing someone is there overnight if you need them
SIL is usually delivered in a shared home, where two or three people with NDIS plans live together and share a support worker. It can also be set up for someone living alone if the level of support needed is high enough.
SIL is about living your life — with the right support behind you. Not being “cared for”. Your goals, your home, your pace.
What SIL does NOT cover
SIL pays for the support workers, not the house itself. Rent, groceries, electricity — those come out of your own pocket or other funding, not your SIL budget.
If you need specialist accommodation (like a home designed for accessibility), that’s a different funding category called Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA). SIL and SDA are separate, but they often work together.
How do you get SIL funding in your NDIS plan?
SIL funding works differently to most other NDIS supports. There’s no fixed dollar amount in your plan. Instead, the process goes like this:
- You, your Support Coordinator, and relevant health professionals work out how much support you need each day
- Your Support Coordinator helps you find a suitable home and SIL provider
- The SIL provider puts together a detailed quote and roster for the NDIA to approve
- Once approved, supports begin
It can take time. The process is thorough because the NDIA is approving an ongoing, high-cost support. The best thing you can do is start the conversation early — with your Support Coordinator and with potential SIL providers.
What changes from 1 July 2026
From 1 July 2026, all SIL providers in Australia must be registered with the NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission. This is a significant change.
If you already receive SIL from an unregistered provider, now is the time to ask them about their registration plans. Your funding will not change — but your provider must be registered to keep delivering SIL after that date.
If you’re looking for a new SIL provider, choosing a registered provider from the start means one less thing to worry about.
SIL in Ipswich and South-East Queensland
The Ipswich region — which includes Springfield Lakes, Goodna, Redbank Plains, and surrounding suburbs — has one of the fastest-growing NDIS participant populations in Queensland. There are over 14,000 active NDIS participants in the Ipswich SA4 area, with strong demand for SIL supports.
That growth means more SIL options are becoming available locally. It also means it’s worth doing your research to find a provider whose values and approach match yours.
What to look for in a SIL provider
Not all providers are the same. Here are the things worth asking about:
- Are they registered with the NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission?
- Are their support workers screened and credentialled?
- Do they deliver the supports themselves, or do they subcontract?
- How do they handle things when your needs change?
- Can you meet the team before committing?
At Accessway, we’re a registered NDIS provider based in Springfield Lakes. We deliver the support ourselves — no subcontracting, no national chain. If you want to know what’s available in your area, get in touch and we’ll have an honest conversation.
