How to Choose an NDIS Provider in South-East Queensland: A Checklist for Participants and Families
Choosing an NDIS provider is one of the most important decisions you’ll make. The right provider shows up consistently, communicates well, and genuinely helps you reach your goals. The wrong one wastes your funding and your time.
Here’s a straightforward checklist to help you find the right fit — whether you’re looking in Ipswich, Logan, Springfield Lakes, or anywhere across South-East Queensland.
1. Check they’re actually registered
Registered NDIS providers must meet the NDIS Practice Standards and are regularly audited by the NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission. That means screened workers, documented processes, and somewhere to go if something goes wrong.
You can check a provider’s registration status on the NDIS Provider Finder at ndis.gov.au. Search by name or ABN.
From 1 July 2026, registration is mandatory for SIL providers. If you’re looking for SIL supports, a registered provider is the only option going forward.
2. Make sure they deliver what you actually need
NDIS registration is divided into “registration groups” — specific types of support a provider is approved to deliver. A provider registered for community access isn’t automatically approved for high-intensity personal care or behaviour support implementation.
Ask directly: which registration groups are you registered under? If they can’t answer clearly, that’s a red flag.
3. Ask who actually turns up
Some providers coordinate your supports but subcontract the actual delivery to other workers or agencies. That can mean inconsistency — different faces every week, workers who don’t know your history.
Ask: do you employ your own support workers, or do you use subcontractors? The answer matters a lot, especially for SIL or regular daily supports.
4. Check they’re local
A provider based in South-East Queensland will roster more reliably than one with a head office in Sydney or Melbourne. Local teams respond faster when things change — a sick worker, a last-minute shift, a new goal you want to work towards.
Ask where their team is based and how far they regularly roster. “We cover all of Queensland” often means “we’re thin on the ground in your suburb.”
5. Ask about staff credentialling
At minimum, every support worker should have:
- A current NDIS Worker Screening Check
- Completion of the NDIS Worker Orientation Module
- Current First Aid and CPR
- Relevant medication administration certificates where needed
A good provider will be able to tell you this without hesitation. If they fumble the answer, keep looking.
6. Read the service agreement carefully
Before you sign anything, make sure you understand:
- How much notice is required to cancel a shift or end the agreement
- What happens if your regular worker is unavailable
- How complaints are handled
- How your budget is tracked and reported
You have the right to take your time. A good provider will not pressure you to sign quickly.
7. Trust your instincts about the relationship
Credentials matter. So does how a provider makes you feel when you talk to them.
Do they listen? Do they ask about your goals, or just your funding categories? Do they talk about you as a person, or as a case to fill?
The support worker who turns up at your door will spend time in your home, your life. The relationship has to feel right.
At Accessway, we’re a small, Queensland-owned provider based in Springfield Lakes. We deliver direct support across Ipswich, Logan and greater Brisbane. We don’t subcontract. We don’t have a head office in another state. If you want to have a conversation about whether we’re the right fit, we’re genuinely happy to talk — no pressure.
Questions to ask any provider before you commit
- Are you registered with the NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission? What registration groups?
- Do you employ your own workers or use subcontractors?
- How do you handle it if my regular worker is sick?
- What’s your process if I have a complaint?
- Can I meet the team before I sign anything?
- What does your service agreement say about notice periods?
Write the answers down. Compare them across providers. The one who answers clearly and honestly, without sales pressure, is usually the one worth choosing.
You’ve got this. And we’re here if you need us.
