Why Community Access Matters

Updated: Sep 17

At Accessway, we believe that community access is a key part of living a full and independent life. Being part of your local community means making friends, learning new things, and feeling included. When you join in activities outside home, like going to a sports club or a volunteer group, you build confidence and show the world what you can do. Community access is an NDIS support that helps you connect with your community and reach your personal goals.

Benefits of Community Access

Community access brings many benefits:

  • Social connections: Meeting people and making friends can brighten your day and reduce loneliness.

  • Skill building: Simple acts like riding the bus, shopping, or attending classes help you grow independent living skills.

  • Health and well-being: Fun activities like sports, music or art keep both body and mind active and happy.

  • Personal independence: Every trip out teaches you more about the world and helps you feel proud of your achievements.

  • Sense of belonging: Feeling part of a group or event gives you joy and motivation in life.

  • Supported outings: Accessway staff help plan accessible transport and accompany you, so you can focus on enjoying every experience.

Community Story / Outing

A young man that struggles with light and sound sensitivity to play basketball, which is a goal of his to get better at, but because of the loud noises around the local basketball courts from children at parks, dogs, or power tools - he found it very difficult to practice. He and his support worker drove all around Brisbane to find the ideal court that was peaceful enough to play at, and after 5 attempts, they had no luck.

This almost made the young man give up and go home, but after talking through it, they decided to try one more. They found a basketball court that is in the most ideal spot, and they were grateful they kept trying, and now they get to play and practice basketball there and learnt valuable lessons along the way. His new goal is to eventually be able to join a basketball team, all thanks to getting out and not giving up.

Every person deserves a chance to belong. At Accessway, we support your goals in the community, whether it’s finding a new hobby, joining a club, or volunteering. Our friendly staff will accompany and encourage you every step of the way.
