What is NDIS Community Access — and How Can You Use It in South-East Queensland?
Community access is one of the most flexible supports in your NDIS plan. It’s also one of the most underused — because a lot of people aren’t sure exactly what it covers or how to make the most of it.
What community access actually means
Community access — officially called “Participation in Community, Social and Civic Activities” under NDIS — is funding that helps you get out, connect with people, and take part in life outside your home.
It’s not about going to a programme someone else designed. It’s about what you want to do. Your goals. Your interests. Your community.
That might look like:
- Getting to and from appointments with a support worker
- Visiting friends or family
- Joining a local club, class, or group
- Going to the gym, pool, or park
- Volunteering or contributing to your community
- Learning new skills out in the world — shopping, using public transport, managing everyday tasks
Community access is not just transport. It’s the support you need to actually participate — not just arrive.
How it’s funded in your NDIS plan
Community access sits inside your Core Supports budget, under “Assistance with Social, Economic and Community Participation.” It’s one of the more flexible funding categories — meaning in many plans, you have some discretion about how you use it.
Not sure if you have community access funding? Check your NDIS plan, or ask your Support Coordinator. If you’re not getting the most out of your current budget, a plan review might be worth exploring.
Who delivers community access in Ipswich, Logan and Brisbane?
Community access is delivered by registered NDIS providers with the right registration group. The support worker comes with you — they’re not just a driver, they’re there to support your participation.
In South-East Queensland, options are growing. The Ipswich SA4 — which includes Springfield Lakes, Goodna, Redbank Plains, Ripley and surrounding suburbs — has more than 14,000 active NDIS participants. That means a lot of community options and a growing number of providers.
The key is finding a provider who actually knows your area. Someone who can take you to the Springfield Central Hub, the Goodna Community House, the Logan Entertainment Centre — not just a provider who claims to cover “all of Queensland” from an office in another city.
What makes a good community access support worker?
It’s not just about getting you from A to B. A good community access worker:
- Understands your goals and what you’re building toward
- Supports your participation, rather than doing things for you
- Knows how to step back when you want independence, and step in when you need support
- Is consistent — the same face each week, not a different person every session
- Communicates clearly with your broader support team
Consistency matters most. It’s hard to build confidence and skills in the community if you’re constantly explaining your needs to a new worker.
Community access and SIL — what’s the difference?
If you receive Supported Independent Living (SIL) supports, community access is a separate category. When you’re out in the community, that time is funded under your community participation budget — not your SIL budget. The NDIS only pays for one support at a time.
Your Support Coordinator can help you make sure your plan is structured to cover both, so you’re not left with gaps.
Getting started
If you want to use your community access funding but aren’t sure where to start, the simplest step is to write down three things you’d like to do, try, or be part of. Bring that list to your next conversation with your Support Coordinator or provider.
Your goals don’t have to be grand. Sometimes it’s just “I want to go to the markets on Saturday” or “I want to get back to the gym.” Those goals are worth pursuing.
